About Us

Welcome to the Malaylee Muslims in the New England area of the US. Our community includes members from the six states in the Northeastern United States: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The New England Malayalee Muslims (NEMM) started with a yahoo group in the summer of 2002. At the time, the group was called Mass Mopillas. Many of the early members moved into the New England area around the late 90s.

For some, the search for someone who looks and acts like a Malayalee Muslim took a while. While for others, it was quick through friends and relatives. They first met as a group on December 7, 2002, for a dinner to celebrate Eid at Shrewsbury Commons clubhouse. Yasmin and Amin organized it with 11 families across the New England area, which consists of families primarily from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. It was a gathering of 11 families across New England, primarily from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Though many have moved on to other states and countries, the community maintains a strength of around 50 families. It meets yearly for Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Thanksgiving, and special occasions. The community activities include camping during spring and fall and playing soccer whenever the weather is above 10 F.
